I have taken a step towards a dream of mine…. adventuring in a campervan. For me it’s a lifestyle choice, being able to drop everything and drive to somewhere new to enjoy a bit of rare British sun….or just to enjoy exploring and not begrudge the rain!
When I paint this lifestyle dream, what I actually mean is that I have bought a blank canvas of a van, ripe to convert. I am no expert DIY’er so this is going to be a slow, but hopefully rewarding journey.
The van I bought was a 1998 1800cc T4. A classic white van, it had been a carpenters van so it was full of sawdust and nails when I bought it. It did have basic panels in the back and a solid ply floor but otherwise it was a blank canvas.
There are so many great camper conversions out there that it inspired me to make my own. This blog starts really as an outlet for me to record my journey. Creating a campervan with little DIY or motor experience and my exploration of life with a van, to celebrate all my adventures in it.
Although there are amazing conversions out there in all shapes and forms, I ideally longed for a VW. This is probably because I grew up never knowing a time where my family didn’t have a VW campervan. I remember the 1600 air cooled yellow T25 and the T2 orange Bay with side lifting pop roof and hammocks for me and my brother as children – actually I distinctly remember that we had this one twice! As we grew up I was introduced to the T25 water cooled version and then the T4. My first ‘borrowed car’ after I passed my driving test was dad’s T25 1986 water cooled campervan….brave man!
Now I must make one admission….I actually bought the van two years ago, very late in the season. My first winter/spring saw me get it to a basic, usable state, the words “glorified tent” comes to mind! This last Autumn – Spring season has seen the van develop dramatically and that development has pushed me to start this journal in earnest.
I hope you both enjoy my journey and find this site helpful!
